Taiye Selasi gives a public lecture on TOGETHER: multilocal identity in a hyperlocal context. In her TED talk from 2014 Selasi spoke about three conditions for being a local. Since then there has been an increase in mobility, and not just the refugee movement which dominates headlines.
More and more of us study or work for sometime abroad; Dutch universities and workplaces are increasingly international. But importantly this doesn't only hold for cosmopolitan metropoles, it also holds in smaller peripheral cities such as Groningen, where regional identity and networks dominate. Selasi will reflect on how the increasingly multilocal experience of her residents can connect to the hyperlocal character of the region; how the 'anywheres' and the 'somewheres' can engage with and shape each other.
She will give an update on the conditions of being a local, on multilocal identity, ways of belonging and forms of solidarity, in a localised, regionally oriented context.
